A group of visual artists and musicians from Music & Art Class of ’69 assembled in November of 2013 to put on an unprecedented group exhibition at a L.I.C. art gallery. ARTISTS EVOLVED, as the show was named, captured the attention of our local PBS station (Channel 13).  A short film, which beautifully displays the exhibition and includes interviews with former M&A students, and a former M&A teacher will be aired on Channel 13 on June 28, 2015 at 7pm. This extraordinary film was created by videographer Audrey Black of Cinealpha, Inc. Ms. Black is the daughter of Harriet Black, M&A class ’69.

В M&A ARTISTS EVOLVED Show Captures the Attention of PBS Television

In November of 2013, thirty-six former high school classmates of more than four decades ago came together in an unprecedented move to participate in a group show entitled ARTISTS EVOLVED. The exhibition was made unique by its diverse representation of talent, ethnicities, religions, socioeconomics and life experiences; but made common by an institutional creative process of nearly a half century ago that took place in New York City’s High School of Music and Art (now named LaGuardia School of the Arts). This common educational experience took place against the backdrop of the civil rights and women’s rights movements and the Vietnam war.

A short film of the ARTISTS EVOLVED show, which includes interviews with artists and a former M&A teacher, and a collection of poignant stills from the school during the turbulent ‘60s, captured the attention of New York City’s PBS television station (Channel 13). PBS will be airing the film, created by videographer Audrey Black of Cinealpha, Inc. (daughter of Harriet Black, M&A class ’69) В during the month of June, 2015.This film serves as a testament to the infinite possibilities among diverse people when the arts are the essence.

Both as teenagers in the ’60’s and 60-something year-olds today, it is this creative process that continues to be the bridge connecting us to our work, to each other and to the world”  – former M&AВ ’69 graduate and ARTISTS EVOLVED artist.

Many of the exhibiting artists are accomplished in their own right, having been recognized, awarded and published around the world.В However, whether publicly recognized or not, this unusually cohesive group of visual artists and musicians from the High School of Music and Art class of 1969 are gifted now as then, and continue to support cultivation of the arts for all those generations that have and will follow.
