The Fanny Metz Greenfield Award was established by Bernice Silverman (M&A ’47), daughter of Fanny Metz Greenfield, to help an art student pursue their talent over the summer months.

Fanny Metz Greenfield was an immigrant, who had the courage to come to this country from Europe, but who had to work and never had the opportunity to study beyond elementary school. Despite this fact, she had a reverent admiration of learning which stemmed from her Jewish Heritage. Her own native intelligence, perseverance and determination, enabled her to informally increase her level of knowledge and culture. In the late 1940’s, she changed from being a housewife to working in a garment factory, so that her daughter could attend Barnard College. Had she lived at a time when women enjoyed greater value, or, had she herself enjoyed the opportunities afforded her daughter, her own educational achievements would have done honor to her memory.

‘Don’t ever dare to take your education as a matter of course because, like freedom and democracy, many people you’ll never know anything about, have broken their hearts to get it for you.’
