Each June, students receive awards from named funds set up by donors in memory of a loved one or in honor of a beloved teacher or class. This year, 190 awards were made to students. Each award recipient sends a thank-you note to the donor along with samples of his or her work. To give you a sense of how meaningful these awards are to our students the following are excerpts from their letters of gratitude.

“I thank you so much for this tremendous award. Words cannot describe the butterflies I felt as they called me up for the award or how thankful I am to A&F. Thank you for feeding my confidence and the confidence of so many other students.”

C.Chong / Gail Melhado award

“I am incredibly honored to have received such a generous and thoughtful award. My time at LaGuardia has changed my life forever. A&F has contributed greatly to my growth as a student and as an actor. My travels to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival may never have happened without your support. Thank you again for this recognition. I will forever be grateful.”

L. Santiago / A&F Graduation award

“Thank you so much for your generosity and perpetual effort to promote the arts. This award encourages me to continue to excel in music and face the many challenges ahead.“

“I can’t thank you enough for this award as I am both honored and humbled by it. I have come to the conclusion that this is just another sign that I should keep working hard and pushing for my dreams to come true. I promise to myself and to you that I will keep working and striving in the pursuit of my passion in action and film. Thank you, I am so grateful!”

J. Kharkover / Richard Harden award

“It was indeed a great privilege to hear my name called in honor and remembrance of Desiree Keras — such an inspiring, ambitious and talented young woman. This drives me to be better each and every day and to impact someone in my life the way Desiree has impacted mine. She will always be a reminder to persevere through any obstacle and aspire to be like her.”

“I also wanted to thank you again for this incredible honor — I really appreciate everything A&F has done, not only for my own personal benefit, but for every other person at LaGuardia.”

“I had the privilege of being taught by some of LaGuardia’s highly revered English teachers. It is true when they say that teachers change lives, but I was utterly unaware of how immense that impact would be until now. ‘¦they encouraged me to explore, question, and experience places beyond my comfort zone through reading, writing and self-expression … and introduced me to some of my favorite books and showed me the different dimensions of literature. I look forward to following in your footsteps and having the opportunity to polish someone’s senior year as you did mine.”

I. Alonzo / Elsie Hermann Memorial Journalism award

My son’s experience at LaGuardia has surpassed my highest expectations. Thank you for your expert teaching, never ending support, motivational guidance, opportunity granting, and not least of all, friendship. My son has blossomed into a mature, caring, considerate, risk taker, and confident human being. You all were instrumental in his personal maturation. I am so proud of him.
I am confident he will succeed at whatever he wishes to pursue. Sure, there will be bumps in the road, challenges and frustrations he will encounter, but that’s life. I do know that wherever his journey takes him, and whatever stops he makes along the road he will always consider the drama department in the basement of LaGuardia High School home.
