Recent Passings:

Steve ZawelSteve Zawel, M&A ’63, passed away February 28 in Laguna Beach, CA. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Madeline, his sons, Adam (Ora), Ryan (Nicki), six grandchildren and hundreds of students whom he has impacted throughout his life. For 35 years, he directed masterful scholastic theatre productions in the metro area. In 2011, he was bestowed with the Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award. His family and friends have established the Steve Zawel Memorial Music Theater Fund.

We are sorry to report the passing of Florence Tilem Hayos, M&A ’46, who passed away on December 27, 2018.

Wally Berger, M&A ’42, age 93, died peacefully on February 17, 2019 with his family by his bedside. Adored husband of Merle Bogin Berger, father of Andrea (Adam) and Adam (Katharine), brother of Joan Berger Moss, grandfather of Elizabeth, Louisa and Clara, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by Ruth, his beloved wife of 52 years. Born in the Bronx, saw action in WWII in the Ardennes Counteroffensive with the 101st Infantry, 26th Division, where he was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. A graduate of the Illinois Institute of Design and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, he practiced architecture almost until his death. Wally was tall, dashing, charming and a marvelous raconteur, an accomplished water colorist, sketcher, tennis player, woodworker and furniture builder. He was supportive, engaged, principled and loved by his family.

We are sad to report the passing of Amy Brook Snider, M&A ’57, who died on December 17, 2018. After graduating M&A, she studied painting and earned a PhD in Education from NYU. Dr. Snider was a teacher of art and design education in public school and at Pratt Institute for decades. At Pratt, she founded the Art & Design Education Department and was its chair for over 30 years, where she remained Professor Emerita until her passing. She is survived by her daughter, Ivy Crewdson, her grandchildren Lilianna Crewdson and Walker Crewdson, and her sister, Jenny Snider.

We are sad to report that Jan Hansen Kushell, M&A ’61, passed away on Valentine’s Day, 2019.

We are sad to report the passing of Donald Alter, M&A ’48, a Black Mountain College artist and textile designer, passed away on February 16, 2019.

Amy Chasnoff Finkston, M&A ’57, passed away on January 31, 2019. Following graduation from M&A, Amy received a B.F.A. from Cornell University. Amy is survived by her husband, Herbert Finkston, whom she married in 1963, as well as her children Neil and Karen, her son-in-law Giora Payes, her brother Paul Chasnoff and beloved grandchildren Noah and Sarah. Donations in Amy’s memory may be made to The Center for Arts Education and the Special Olympics.
